San Francisco 49ers

"My great grandkids will know about that team. Those guys SET the standard." - Vernon Davis

The 1988 San Francisco 49ers began the regular season 6-5, but won four of their final five games and had a Super Bowl comeback for the ages. After winning the NFC West in a 3-way tie at 10-6, the 49ers faced the team who eliminated them the previous year. Playing the Vikings in the divisional round, Joe Montana threw three touchdown passes to Jerry Rice, while running back Roger Craig ran for two scores, as the 49ers won, 34-9. In the NFC Championship game at windy and freezing-cold Chicago, the Niners upset the Bears, 28-3, thanks to three Joe Montana touchdowns. Trailing 16-13 in Super Bowl XXIII, Joe Montana led the 49ers on an 11 play, 92 yard drive. Montana threw a game-winning TD to John Taylor with under 40 seconds left. Jerry Rice caught 11 catches for 215 yards and was named Super Bowl MVP. The 20-16 victory gave the 49ers their 3rd Super Bowl title in eight seasons.
