Tennessee Titans
In the final seconds of Super Bowl XXXIV, the 1999 Tennessee Titans came within a yard of forcing overtime against the St. Louis Rams, which boasted one of the NFL’s all-time best offenses. During the regular season, Pro Bowl running back Eddie George keyed the Titans offense with 1,304 yards rushing and nine touchdowns. QB Steve McNair threw for 12 TDs and ran for eight, while on defense, 23-year-old defensive end Jevon Kearse had an All-Pro season, totaling 14.5 sacks and winning the Defensive Rookie of the Year. Despite their 13-3 regular season, however, the Titans had to play in the AFC’s Wild Card game. All but certain to lose with seconds remaining against Buffalo, the Titans pulled out a Music City Miracle with a 75-yard touchdown return and defeated the Bills, 22-16. Tennessee won by 3 at Indianapolis in the AFC Divisional Round, and blew out Jacksonville, 33-14 to capture the AFC Championship. In the Super Bowl, the Titans were tied with the favored Rams, 16-16, with just over two minutes left in the fourth quarter. But a long, quick-strike TD pass by St. Louis put the Rams back ahead. On the Titans final drive, Kevin Dyson was tackled at the 1-yard-line as time expired.
