Tom Landry’s Dallas Cowboys entered the 1978 season as defending Super Bowl champions. Featuring Hall of Famers Roger Staubach at quarterback and Tony Dorsett at running back, Dallas led the NFL in scoring and won the NFC East with a 12-4 record. After entering the playoffs on a six-game winning streak and beating the Falcons in the Divisional round, the Cowboys shut out the Los Angeles Rams, 28-0, in the NFC title game. In Super Bowl XIII, they faced the Pittsburgh Steelers, with the winner to become the first franchise to win 3 Super Bowls. Staubach threw three TD passes, and would have had four if not for a crucial Jackie Smith end zone drop. Steelers QB Terry Bradshaw tossed four TD passes and the Cowboys lost, 35-31. Offensively, Pro Bowlers for the Cowboys included Staubach, Tony Dorsett, wide receiver Tony Hill and tight end Billy Joe DuPree.
