Providence Steam Roller
The Providence Steam Roller played only seven seasons in the NFL, and folded during the Great Depression. But for one special year, this Rhode Island-based team earned the right to be called NFL champs. In 1928, the Steam Roller went 8-1-2 thanks to a defense that allowed just 42 points all season with 5 shutouts. In an era before an NFL postseason, Providence – whose home games were mainly played at the Cycledome, a bicycle-racing arena – edged out the second-place Frankford Yellow Jackets, who won three more games than the Steam Roller but who had a lower winning percentage. The Steam Roller was led by player/coach and future Hall of Famer Jimmy Conzelman along with tailback George "Wildcat" Wilson, who rushed for five TDs.
