Washington Redskins

First year in D.C.

In 1937, the Redskins won an NFL championship in their first year in Washington D.C. Behind their all-Pro rookie QB, “Slinging” Sammy Baugh, who led the league in passing yards, and Hall of Fame coach Ray Flaherty, the Redskins won the East Division with an 8-3 record. In the NFL title matchup against George Halas’ Bears, Baugh threw for 335 yards and three TDs, two of them to Hall of Fame end Wayne Millner, as the Redskins won 28-21 in frigid Chicago weather. Washington, which finished second in the NFL in total yards that season, had won its final regular season game in New York against the second-place Giants, 49-14. In that Eastern Division matchup, Baugh had completed 11 of his 15 throws while the Hall of Fame halfback Cliff Battles ran for TDs of 75 and 76 yards. Battles, who was in his final NFL season, led the league in 1937 with 87.4 rushing yards per game.
