Breece Hall's hammerlock on the bulk of the New York Jets' carries appears to be ending.
Last week, at the NFL's Annual League Meeting, Gang Green coach Aaron Glenn noted that he prefers to use a three-RB rotation with Hall, Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis getting touches.
"I think, mentally, [Hall] is in a good place, but I would say that we have three running backs on this team that we're going to utilize as much as possible," Glenn said, via ESPN's Rich Cimini. "They're all big men, they can run, they're violent, they're physical.
"So I think once we get a chance to get the players in and see exactly how they operate, I think every player is going to be happy with the way that we go about this offense, and I think he's going to be one of them."
An ACL tear shortened Hall's rookie campaign. In each of the past two years, he's seen 200-plus carries. The dynamic 23-year-old's efficiency has slowed with each season. He generated 5.8 yards per carry during his injury-shortened rookie campaign, 4.5 YPC in 2023 and 4.2 in 2024. Glenn is likely trying to goose that figure by shaving off some touches.
Glenn and new Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand saw first-hand the benefits of having a two-headed monster in Detroit. Dynamic Jahmyr Gibbs, like Hall, a dual threat, could have handled a larger load, but the shared force with bruiser David Montgomery kept both fresh and defenses on their heels.
It will be notable how Hall reacts to the idea of seeing some reps siphoned. The former second-round pick is heading into a contract season. Will he rebuff the idea that fewer carries could lead to more production? Will he play along with his new head coach? If things go sideways early, Hall could push for a trade to a destination where he might be sure of a hefty workload.
Hall and the rest of the offense will get a first look at Glenn and Engstrand's plans as they kick off the voluntary offseason program on Monday, which consists primarily of meetings and workouts.
