After an offseason of being caught on camera doing everything from allegedly signing autographs for memorabilia dealers to partying at a University of Texas fraternity house, Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel no doubt feels used to be spied on.
On Saturday, he'll get spied on again, in a much different way.
Alabama linebacker C.J. Mosley, the No.7-ranked senior NFL draft prospect in college football according to NFL.com's Gil Brandt, said he will be spying on Manziel's every move when the Crimson Tide takes on the Aggies' Heisman Trophy winner Saturday. Mosley excels in pass coverage, but is Alabama's best open-field tackler.
"In the SEC, you don't spy too many quarterbacks," Mosley said, according to al.com. "It's a honor to spy a Heisman Trophy winner, so I have to do my job and the defense, as well. We just have to execute."
"Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's me," Mosley said when asked specifically if he would be the Manziel spy. In a spy role, Mosley will be charged with not only handling his pass-coverage responsibility, but also being immediately aware when Manziel breaks from the pocket and crosses the line of scrimmage to run.
After compiling more than 1,400 rushing yards last season, the sophomore has shown he doesn't need open receivers to move the A&M offense. Never one to divulge a piece of a game plan, UA coach Nick Saban wouldn't confirm Mosley's role when asked about it earlier in the week.
"I'm not sure that we have a player on our team who can spy this guy, but if there was anybody, he's probably as good as any," Saban said.
