File this in the way-too-soon category: Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery expects 2014 NFL Draft prospect Jadeveon Clowney to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
It's a pretty outrageous claim for anyone to make about a rookie-to-be who doesn't even yet know what a day of NFL training camp feels like, much less a day of slamming into an All-Pro left tackle, or even an average one, for that matter. But the former South Carolina star put it out there, nonetheless.
"He knows what he has to do," Jeffery said, according to gogamecocks.com. "He's going to be a great player. He's going to dominate the league, and he's going to be a Hall of Famer."
Clowney certainly looked the part at his pro-day workout Wednesday, drawing rave reviews and a gaggle of representatives from NFL clubs, one of which will make Clowney a wealthy man in about five weeks. In fact, the Houston Texans, who hold the No. 1 overall pick, appeared to be as interested as anyone.
Jeffery's prediction might carry a bit more weight if he were an offensive tackle and knew what it was like to compete against Clowney at South Carolina (in practice), and against the best the NFL had to offer, as well. At least there would then be some context. In this case, however, the only real context is that their college career paths crossed for all of one season, 2011, Jeffery's last at the school and Clowney's first.
Jeffery had to be joking, right? Let's hope.
