Andy Reid won't resign as Philadelphia Eagles coach

Andy Reid is unlikely to coach the Philadelphia Eagles beyond this season. But don't expect him to leave town before then ... at least under his own will.

One day after the Eagles' 31-6 loss to the Washington Redskins -- Philadelphia's sixth consecutive defeat -- Reid dismissed the possibility he'll step down before the end of the season.

Rapoport: Eagles in free-fall

Philly fans clamoring for Nick Foles got their wish, but Ian Rapoport says these Eagles are beyond salvation. **More ...**

"I think that'd be a cop-out," Reid said Monday, according to The Associated Press. "That's not how I see things. That's not the way I'm wired. We're going to keep battling and do it as a team. I'm not going to tell the guys one thing and then do the other."

Reid has been a survivor in 14 seasons in Philadelphia, but he's almost certainly out of a job, barring a miraculous late run by the Eagles. Owner Jeffrey Lurie is on record saying another 8-8 season would be "unacceptable." The Eagles (3-7) are unlikely to sniff .500, let alone exceed it.

"He's a competitive guy, and nobody wants to win more than Jeffrey," Reid said Monday. "I would tell you he's disappointed. I would tell you rightly so. He feels the same way we do that we're letting people down in this city and so on. So, that's what I can tell you."

Reid needs a fresh start. So do the Eagles. The rest of this misbegotten season is accompanied by a ticking clock.
