Bad news: Goal post dunks reportedly still banned

While everyone celebrates the NFL's decision to relax celebration penalties, it should be stated that perhaps the most emphatic display of touchdown joy remains squarely on the banned list.

ESPN reported Thursday, citing a source with knowledge of the situation, that the league will continue to prohibit players from dunking over the crossbar after touchdowns. Blerg.

This is all Jimmy Graham's fault, of course. The no-fun police was happy to look the other way as Tony Gonzalez threw it down for 15 years. But once Graham showed up and began to emulate his former hoops star contemporary, the league felt compelled to take notice.

It was Week 12 of the 2013 season. Graham, then in his Saints heyday, scored a touchdown at home against the Falcons and then made his way to the back of the end zone. It became a turning point in NFL history (well, not really, but let's have some fun.)

Once the spirit level came out, you knew it was all over. It was like when the cops show up and confiscate the keg. The party was over.

One thing that hasn't changed with the relaxed rules: Players still cannot use the goal post as a prop. So don't expect to see any more 360-degree throwdowns, like Megatron gifted us once upon a time. Come to think of it, this remains on the no-fly list as well ...
