Never at a loss for an incendiary comment or hesitant to deliver the truth, harsh as it may be, Baker Mayfield is currently the poster boy for the Cleveland Browns renaissance.
However, the Oklahoma product still has Sooner pride running deep.
Hence, when appearing Wednesday on Sportstalk 1400, Mayfield didn't hold back when asked about the preseason hype behind archrival Texas.
"They said the same thing when they beat Notre Dame a couple of years ago, and they won like three games after that," said Mayfield, who recently stirred some discontent within Cleveland with his comments on running back Duke Johnson. "I'm sick of that crap."
What he's apparently not sick of is taking shots at former Texas contemporary Sam Ehlinger, the current Longhorns quarterback. Both were high school standouts in the Lone Star State, with Ehlinger playing for Westlake and Mayfield slinging it for Lake Travis. They faced off in 2017 with Mayfield's Sooners defeating Ehlinger's Longhorns.
"He couldn't beat Lake Travis, so I don't really care about] his opinion on winning," Mayfield said on the podcast [via ESPN. "Westlake is a great program, but the two best quarterbacks to come out of there are Drew Brees and Nick Foles. Sam can stay down there in Texas.
"That will stir the pot. ... He doesn't like me and I hope he knows I don't like him either."
Mayfield went 2-2 in his four-year college tenure against Oklahoma, losing once as a freshman while at Texas Tech and then winning the last two outings he played in. His 2017 triumph, part of his Heisman-winning campaign, came against Ehlinger, though the latter evened his career Red River record with a 2018 triumph in the regular season before falling to 1-2 when the Sooners prevailed in the Big 12 Championship.
It might seem a bit odd that a current NFL quarterback, particularly one who set the NFL rookie record with 27 touchdown throws as Mayfield did, would be taking shots at a current college QB, but there's obviously history. And the Red River rivalry apparently is always flowing.
Though many might argue Mayfield should be worried about rivalries with the likes of the AFC North's Cincinnati Bengals, Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens, it's clear his Sooner loyalty is still strong.
