The Cincinnati Bengals announced Monday that they have hired Mark Carrier as defensive backs coach and named Paul Guenther linebackers coach.
Carrier coached the New York Jets' defensive line the last two seasons after spending the previous four seasons as the Baltimore Ravens' defensive backs coach. He played safety for 11 years with Chicago, Detroit and Washington.
"Mark is a great choice for us as he moves back to his old position, coaching the defensive secondary," Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said in a release. "He experienced success as a coach with two fine NFL defenses, and he will do very well with our group."
Carrier replaces Kevin Coyle, who was hired as the defensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins.
It had been reported that Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Rod Woodson was thought to be a candidate for the position.
Guenther has been with the Bengals for eight seasons, most recently as a special teams/defensive backs coach.
