INDIANAPOLIS -- Count Denver Broncos cornerback Chris Harris as unimpressed with the speed of the 2016 NFL Draft's wide receiver class.
Harris chimed in with this commentary on Saturday as WRs were running the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine.
He wasn't alone in that opinion. NFL Media draft expert Mike Mayock said during Saturday's NFL Network broadcast of the combine that this is "the slowest (WR) class that I can remember."
The average 40 for WRs this year is 4.56 seconds, which is the slowest average for the position since 2011. It ties for the second-slowest average 40 time by WRs since 2003.
The WR class certainly didn't enter the combine without fanfare when it comes to speed. TCU's Kolby Listenbee, Notre Dame's Will Fuller were mentioned as candidates to break Chris Johnson's 40 record of 4.24 seconds.
Fuller posted a 40 time Saturday of 4.32, and Listenbee ran a 4.39 -- not too shabby. Those are the best two times of the day. On the other hand, Mississippi State's De'Runnya Wilson had the slowest time of the day, running a 4.85 40.
Between the two extremes, there were a lot of so-so times that aren't going to keep Harris and his fellow NFL DBs up at night.
However, before we get too caught up in 40 times, let's keep this in mind: Harris struggled against Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown in Week 15 of the 2015 season. Brown's combine 40 time was 4.57 in 2010 -- slower than the average WR at this year's combine.
Speed, especially combine speed, is not everything.
