Josh McCown gave his career new life -- and his bank account a sweet upgrade -- after a season under Marc Trestman in Chicago. Could the pair be headed for a reunion?
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the Buccaneers have interviewed Trestman for their vacant offensive coordinator job, according to two people informed of his plans.
The Bucs are searching for a replacement for Jeff Tedford, who was forced to leave the organization due to illness. Trestman was fired by the Bears last Monday after two seasons with the team.
Trestman came to the Bears with a reputation for his ability to improve the play of quarterbacks. He certainly did that with McCown, who replaced an injured Jay Cutler last season and put up some of the best numbers of any quarterback in football over eight games (five starts). McCown parlayed that performance into a two-year, $10 million contract with the Bucs, though his production regressed back to pedestrian levels on a 2-14 team.
McCown recently stumped for Trestman, who is a hot name on the offensive coordinator market right now.
"I think Marc is an outstanding coach and an outstanding person and he has a great sense of offensive football, especially quarterback play," McCown said. "I just know that, for me personally, I played my best football in my career under him. So obviously I have good things to say."
McCown's no dummy. He knows his chances of getting a second shot as a starter in Tampa will be strengthened with Trestman in the picture. And with the Bucs standing a very good chance of drafting a quarterback with the first-overall pick in April, employing a QB-savvy coordinator makes a ton of sense.
