Kevin Kolb saw most of the reps with the Buffalo Bills' first-team offense, and EJ Manuel led the second unit at Sunday's opening training-camp practice.
Bills coach Doug Marrone praised both quarterbacks equally and said he plans to slide more of the first-team time toward the rookie, Manuel, until it's "50-50" during camp. And while Marrone declined to say who'd start in the Bills' first preseason game, the first-year coach did put a date on when he'd like to choose his regular-season starter.
"You like to sit there as a coach and say you'd like that decision to just come up in front of you," Marrone said, per the Associated Press. "Really if you can get 10, 12 days prior to that first game, that's when you're going to get pressed for time and have to make a decision on a quarterback. That's when you're probably going to start preparing, 10 days out of the first game."
The Bills open their season at home Sept. 8 against the New England Patriots.
There's always a chance the decision will come well before the 10-day marker, if one player -- Manuel, in particular -- outplays the other. Early indicators from Bills camp are that Manuel's size and arm strength have been as good as advertised, but Marrone noted the rookie still lacked "polish."
