The 49ers traded linebacker Cam Johnson to the Indianapolis Coltsin exchange for a seventh-round draft pick, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Monday, per a person informed of the trade. The 49erslater confirmed the trade but didn't disclose the draft-pick compensation.
Johnson, a seventh-round pick out of Virginia in 2012, wrapped up an impressive August with two sacks, two quarterback hurries, six tackles and one touchdown when he recovered his own blocked punt in the preseason finale.
The 49ers needed the roster spot to accommodate rookie wide receiver Chris Harper, who was signed off the Seattle Seahawks' practice squad.
Johnson is a worthwhile gamble for the Colts. Offering plus athleticism as an edge rusher, he'll slot in behind Robert Mathis, Erik Walden and first-round pick Bjoern Werner while pitching in on special teams.
