If the Philadelphia Eagles don't use the No. 8 overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft on a quarterback, they'll at least have done plenty of homework on the best ones available.
In a four-day span this week, the club is conducting private workouts with Cal's Jared Goff, Stanford's Kevin Hogan, North Dakota State's Carson Wentz and Memphis' Paxton Lynch a source told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport. Draft experts consider Goff and Wentz as the draft's top two quarterbacks, and Goff worked out for the club on Monday. Wentz's workout with the Eagles will be Wednesday, and Lynch's is on Thursday. Rapoport reports that team owner Jeffrey Lurie is making the trip for each workout, indicating the seriousness of the club's interest.
Sam Bradford threw for a career-high 3,725 yards last year for the Eagles, but his 19-14 touchdown-to-interception ratio was a concern. The club's commitment to Bradford is less certain now that the man who traded for him, Chip Kelly, is no longer the coach. New Eagles coach Doug Pederson is auditioning a lot of quarterback talent this week, and pro-day workouts aren't as appealing to him in making evaluations.
"I won't go to the pro days as much," Pederson told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "I prefer the individual workouts where you can go a little more hands-on, one-on-one with a guy."
Whether Wentz or Goff are available to Pederson and the Eagles at No. 8 is difficult to project. If the Cleveland Browns fill a glaring team need with one of the two quarterbacks at the No. 2 overall pick, the other would have to fall past five other team, including Kelly's San Francisco 49ers, for Philadelphia to have a chance at the other. Lynch is considered the No. 3 QB in this year's draft and as such, has a better shot of being available at No. 8. Hogan is considered a mid-to-late round prospect.
NFL Media analyst Charles Davis projects the Eagles to draft Goff with the No. 8 pick.
