The Kansas City Chiefs have plenty of faith in Alex Smith, but that didn't stop them from adding another quarterback on Saturday.
The Chiefs used their fifth-round pick (No. 162) on Kevin Hogan, the 6-foot-3, 214-pound passer out of Stanford.
one scout told Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "He is accurate. He does pretty much everything well. He has a funny release. Doesn't Philip Rivers have a funny release?"
A starter in three Rose Bowls, Hogan posted a Wonderlic of 38. Chiefs coach Andy Reid loves intelligent passers -- Smith and Aaron Murray both apply -- which makes this a logical landing spot for Hogan, even if we didn't expect them to pick a quarterback. His presence could mean trouble for third-stringer Tyler Bray.
Hogan's film reveals an unusual throwing motion, but more than a few scouts looked past that, with a second telling McGinn: "That (delivery) doesn't bother me. Sonny Jurgensen had a really weird release. Throws it like Philip Rivers. He's cerebral, smooth."
Winning three Pacific-12 Conference titles, Hogan was 16-6 against AP top-25 opponents and posted a career passer rating of 104.2. Reid is sold, meaning Hogan will have a chance to push for the No. 2 job with a strong camp.
