Marquise Brown's shoulder injury is going to cost him more time than initially expected.
The Chiefs wide receiver will undergo surgery on the affected SC joint and will be placed on injured reserve, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Friday.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed later Friday that Brown would undergo surgery on Monday.
The news comes as a surprise, as Brown had initially been told he would not need surgery to address the injury suffered at the start of the preseason, and was expected to return sometime in September. He had hoped to return to practice this week; instead, he'll he sidelined for at least four more games.
Brown said Friday on social media that he was "disappointed, frustrated and sad" when he learned he'd need surgery.
Brown joined the Chiefs via free agency in March, arriving as a much-needed weapon for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He caught just one pass on the very first play of Kansas City's preseason opener and suffered the sternoclavicular injury -- which is usually more common in motor vehicle accidents than football -- all in seemingly the blink of an eye, requiring hospitalization overnight before being released the following morning.
Tyreek Hill suffered a similar injury in 2019 and only missed a month before returning, giving the Chiefs hope they'd see a similar turnaround from Brown. Unfortunately, that won't be the case with the former 2019 first-round draft pick.
The Chiefs host the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.
