Chiefs put RG Goff on injured reserve, might start RB Smith

The Kansas City Chiefs' beleaguered offense took another hit Wednesday when right guard Mike Goff went on season-ending injured reserve.

That means the Chiefs and their struggling ground game will be without their starting right guard and their most accomplished running back, Larry Johnson, in Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders.

Johnson, who was just 75 yards away from breaking the team rushing record, was released Monday after being suspended for making inappropriate posts on his Twitter account and comments to reporters.

Averaging fewer than 97 yards, the Chiefs' rushing game now will depend on Jamaal Charles and Kolby Smith. Both offer more speed and a better chance of breaking a long play than Johnson, a two-time Pro Bowler who was averaging just 2.7 yards per carry this season behind spotty blocking.

Smith saw his first action in a year last Sunday and had 17 yards on four carries in a 24-21 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Chiefs were being careful with Smith since he was coming off knee surgery.

Smith might even start against the Raiders.

"He's worked real hard. I wouldn't put it past him," Chiefs coach Todd Haley said of Smith. "I'm still trying to keep it within reason and not have the expectations too high and understand really what the situation is. But I would say Kolby Smith's the type of guy who could surprise. I wouldn't say it's out of reason."

Goff, a 12-year veteran, had started seven games for the Chiefs (1-7) before going down with a shoulder injury that has been bothering him since September. He probably will be replaced by Andy Alleman, a three-year veteran who was acquired from the Miami Dolphins in an August trade. Another possibility is Ikechuku Ndukwe, who has backed up right tackle Ryan O'Callaghan.

"Mike obviously was an important piece to us that we signed in the offseason to help a lot of these young guys figure out how to do it," Haley said. "It's disappointing that his season is over. But injuries are a part of this game."

Alleman stepped in for Goff last week against the Jaguars.

"He missed a couple of plays there, but he fought back and finished the game strong and did some good things," Haley said of Alleman. "We'll have to carry on. Injuries are a part of the game. Guys have to step in and get the job done."

Goff has played in 171 games with 154 starts during his 12-year NFL career, also with the Cincinnati Bengals (1998-2003) and San Diego Chargers (2004-08).

The Chiefs also signed linebacker Justin Rogers to undisclosed terms Wednesday. He appeared in 31 games the past two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and made 34 tackles.
