Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (ankle) considered week to week; X-rays negative

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is considered week to week due to an ankle injury he suffered during Sunday's 21-7 win over the Browns, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a source.

Rapoport added that X-rays on Mahomes' ankle came back negative, but more testing and information will be provided on Monday.

Head coach Andy Reid said as much following Sunday's win.

"Patrick, his right ankle has been hurt. It's not broken, but it's sore," Reid said. "He'll get started on the rehab part of it as we go, and then we'll just have to see how he does down the road here."

Mahomes suffered the injury at the 8-minute mark of the fourth quarter, coming up hobbling after a host of Browns defenders hit him high and low just as he let go of an incomplete pass.

“I was trying to make a play happen," Mahomes said. "As I threw the ball I got hit, and I haven’t seen it, It felt like someone hit me from behind as well, so kind of got rolled up on. Kind of happens in football. Try to bound back up but obviously it hurt a little bit. Now we’ll get after the rehab part of it and try to be ready for next week.”

The Chiefs QB limped off the field with the help of his teammates and was seen getting his left ankle taped on the sideline. The team deemed him questionable to return, but veteran Carson Wentz finished the game under center for the Chiefs.

Mahomes, who exited with a 21-7 lead, said he believed could have re-entered the game if needed.

“It’s hard to say right now. Obviously, still adrenaline rolling," Mahomes said of his ankle. "Usually the day after is when you get a good sense of it. I feel like I could have finished the game in different circumstances. But I thought the smart decision was put Carson in. He’s played a lot of football, and he finished the game well.”

Mahomes had been 19-of-38 passing for 159 yards with two touchdowns before exiting the game. Playing behind a shuffled offensive line with left tackle D.J. Humphries out with injury, Mahomes wasn't sacked on Sunday but sustained 12 QB hits.

Kansas City faces a quick turnaround in Weeks 16 and 17 that will put the spotlight on the health of Mahomes' ankle.

The Chiefs host the Houston Texans next Saturday (Dec. 21) and then travel to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers on Christmas Day (Dec. 25).
