Last week, coach Chip Kelly said Nick Foles could win the Philadelphia Eagles' starting quarterback job if Foles went 100-for-100 passing with 27 touchdowns. Foles fell a tad short Sunday, going 22-of-31 passing for 296 yards and three touchdowns while guiding the Eagles to a 31-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"Was he 100 for 100?" Kelly responded when asked if Foles did enough to keep the starting gig next week, even if Michael Vick is healthy, per Phillymag.com.
Kelly didn't indicate he's ready to make a quarterback switch after six good quarters from Foles, but he didn't rule it out either.
"We'll evaluate everything," Kelly said. "Go back and watch the film, see what we did good, see what we did bad, then see where we are, see where Mike is."
Make no mistake: Vick is the starter when healthy. When Kelly made his decision to go with Vick at the start of the season, he knew Foles would see the field at some point. Kelly had to hope Foles would play well Sunday, but he didn't make the original decision only to turn back so soon.
Vick didn't sound like a man worried his job was in jeopardy.
"We haven't talked about that," Vick responded when asked if Kelly had assured him he'd get his job back when healthy, per the Philadelphia Inquirer. "It's no need to talk about it. We gotta go with the momentum, we gotta go with the flow. As players, we do what we're asked to do."
The argument that Foles played well enough in two wins to keep the job will be made on talk radio and in other media, but anyone who thinks Kelly will make a switch at this stage is as naïve as Lloyd Christmas.
