College Football 24/7 writers Bryan Fischer, Chase Goodbread and Mike Huguenin conducted a fantasy mock draft to create their starting 22 from the enormous pool of college players.
Here is how that draft transpired, with comments from the writers:
ROUND 1
Fischer: Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
Tough to pass on Jameis Winston no doubt, but love the accuracy and speed Mariota brings to the table.
Goodbread: Jameis Winston, QB Florida State
Worth his weight in bronze.
Huguenin: Cameron Erving, OT, Florida State
Gotta build from inside out.
ROUND 2
Huguenin: Leonard Williams, DT, USC
The 290-pounder can play defensive end or defensive tackle, but he's a defensive tackle for me.
Goodbread: Randy Gregory, DE, Nebraska
He's primed for monster year; heat on the edge.
Fischer: Cedric Ogbuehi, G, Texas A&M
With Gregory and Williams off the board, I'm building the offensive line.
ROUND 3
Fischer: Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford
Perhaps the most physically gifted offensive lineman in the country.
Goodbread: Brandon Scherff, OT, Iowa
Early run on pass protectors forcing my hand.
Huguenin: Tre Jackson, G, Florida State
Jackson is the best in the nation at his position.
ROUND 4
Huguenin: Michael Bennett, DT, Ohio State
He and Leonard Williams together? Man ...
Goodbread: Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, CB, Oregon
Four picks in, and I have no SEC players yet.
Fischer: Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama
Fast, polished route-runner who will be a featured player on offense.
ROUND 5
Fischer: Nelson Agholor, WR, USC
Another stud at wide receiver who will be a savvy addition to the passing game.
Goodbread: Landon Collins, S, Alabama
Collins is a cross between Mark Barron and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. He will have a dynamite year.
Huguenin: Vic Beasley, DE, Clemson
Beasley is the speediest defensive end in the nation coming off the edge.
ROUND 6
Huguenin: Shilique Calhoun, DE, Michigan State
He's the best pass rusher in the Big Ten.
Goodbread: Ty Montgomery, WR, Stanford
Talked to Stanford coach David Shaw about him at draft. He sold me on Montgomery. He's a big-time return man, too.
Fischer: T.J. Yeldon, RB, Alabama
Yeldon is the best tailback in the country. He can run, catch and pick up the blitz.
ROUND 7
Fischer: Todd Gurley, RB, Georgia
I want both top taibacks in the country, and I don't care about taking them too early.
Goodbread: Myles Jack, LB, UCLA
Believe the hype.
Huguenin: Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin
More carries will mean more yards this fall.
ROUND 8
Huguenin: Vernon Hargreaves III, CB, Florida
Believe the hype; and he's a sophomore.
Goodbread: Mike Davis, RB, South Carolina
Davis is an electrifying talent.
Fischer: P.J. Williams, CB, Florida State
One of the best corners in the country and a very fluid athlete.
ROUND 9
Fischer: Ramik Wilson, LB, Georgia
Wilson is a tackling machine who can play in a 3-4 base defense and the 4-3.
Goodbread: Denzel Perryman, LB, Miami (Fla.)
I like the way he plays downhill.
Huguenin: Ameer Abdullah, RB, Nebraska
Abdullah led the Big Ten in rushing last season, and he can catch, too.
ROUND 10
Huguenin: Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State
Bigger and faster than Darqueze Dennard, but not as polished ... not yet.
Goodbread: Corey Robinson, OT, South Carolina
Plays on the left side for coach Steve Spurrier. Because I selected Scherff in the third round, Robinson will be on the right side for my squad. This is a real mauler.
Fischer: Mario Edwards Jr., DE, FSU
Edwards is a big, strong end who might be able to keep bulking up. Edwards is in store for a big role this year.
ROUND 11
Fischer: Carl Davis, DT, Iowa
Davis has better feet than you think, and he's a taller big man in the middle of the defense.
Goodbread: Mike Matthews, C, Texas A&M
Bloodlines, people.
Huguenin: La'el Collins, OT, LSU
Part of deep and talented senior offensive tackle class this fall.
ROUND 12
Huguenin: Devin Funchess, TE, Michigan
Got to have a tight end who can get deep, and Funchess can do that.
Goodbread: Cedric Reed, DE, Texas
Bookends are secure with Reed and Gregory.
Fischer: Dante Fowler, OLB, Florida
Fowler is a super athlete who can put his hand in the ground or rush from the outside linebacker spot.
ROUND 13
Fischer: Shaq Thompson, LB, Washington
Fast safety who's come up into the box and played very well.
Goodbread: Derrick Malone, LB, Oregon
Malone is a three-down player, but can cover field instead of rush on third down. That is tough to find.
Huguenin: Hroniss Grasu, C, Oregon
Helps make the Ducks offense go.
ROUND 14
Huguenin: Derron Smith, FS, Fresno State
Smith has made 13 picks in the past two seasons, and hits a ton, too.
Goodbread: Rashad Greene, WR, Florida State
Greene had more than 1,000 yards last year, and without Kelvin Benjamin around he is sure to do it again.
Fischer: Robert Nkemdiche, DT, Ole Miss
Nkemdiche is a beast who can play a number of spots and find the backfield with ease.
ROUND 15
Fischer: Cody Prewitt, S, Ole Miss
Prewitt makes it back-to-back selections for the Rebels as I nab the SEC's leader in interceptions last year.
Goodbread: Christian Covington, DL, Rice
Johnny Football and Jake Matthewsmight remember him.
Huguenin: Jaylon Smith, LB, Notre Dame
Smith will be the Irish's next great defender.
ROUND 16
Huguenin: Jordan Richards, SS, Stanford
Richards is a big hitter for a physical Cardinal defense.
Goodbread: Quandre Diggs, CB, Texas
Pairs with Ekpre-Olomu to close out our corners.
Fischer: Chris Jones, DT, Mississippi State
Could play end, but I'm keeping him at defensive tackle as the steal of this draft.
ROUND 17
Fischer: Jalen Collins, CB, LSU
There are a pair of good corners from LSU named Jalen, but I'll take Collins.
Goodbread: Benardrick McKinney, LB, Mississippi State
He has been doing it all since he was a freshman.
Huguenin: Laken Tomlinson, G, Duke
Who is the best guard on the Duke campus? This guy, who chose Duke over a who's-who of Big Ten offers.
ROUND 18
Huguenin: Antwan Goodley, WR, Baylor
Goodley is productive and fast, as all wide receivers should be.
Goodbread: Kurtis Drummond, DB, Michigan State
Drummond closes out the entire defense.
Fischer: O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama
This kid is special, a great pass-catcher and an athletic outlet for the quarterback.
ROUND 19
Fischer: Reese Dismukes, C, Auburn
Dismukes is an underrated part of the Tigers' offensive line. He's a smart four-year starter.
Goodbread: Isaac Seumalo, G, Oregon State
This selection gives me two centers, but I'll bump Seumalo to guard.
Huguenin: Kendall Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
I'm using a 4-2-5 (more good cornerbacks than linebackers), and Fuller is a stud sophomore.
ROUND 20
Huguenin: Eric Kendricks, LB, UCLA
Mychal's brother is the second-leading returning tackler in the Pac-12.
Goodbread: Nick O'Leary, TE, Florida State
A no-motorcycle clause will be bold-faced in his contract.
Fischer: Anthony Harris, S, Virginia
Harris played on a bad team last year, but led the nation in interceptions. He has good size and speed.
ROUND 21
Fischer: Max Tuerk, G, USC
Tuerk has great size but better feet, and can play either guard or offensive tackle.
Goodbread: A.J. Cann, G, South Carolina
Cann gives me two-fifths of what will be the best offensive line in the SEC.
Huguenin: Justin Hardy, WR, East Carolina
I think this guy leads the nation in receptions this fall (he had 114 in 2013).
ROUND 22
Huguenin: Bryce Petty, QB, Baylor
Once the first two picks were quarterbacks (Mariota and Winston), I knew I could wait. Petty should be in top five in the nation in total offense.
Goodbread: Jamison Crowder, WR, Duke
I don't care how small he is, and I don't care where he'll project. This kid is electric.
Fischer: D.J. Humphries, OT, Florida
Since Ogbuehi has played right guard, I'll keep Humphries at tackle.
