In the end, Jim Irsay didn't have any tricks up his sleeve.
The Indianapolis Colts indeed will select Andrew Luck with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft. General manager Ryan Grigson confirmed this as fact Tuesday, according to NFL Network's Albert Breer, saying the Stanford quarterback will join the team June 7 following the end of his classes.
We'll admit it: We had a nagging suspicion Irsay would shock the world and take Robert Griffin III. Irsay is football's most colorful owner, and taking RG3 would've pushed Irsay directly in the spotlight -- a place he has no problem with. Also, Twitter would have exploded ... cryptic classic-rock lyrics everywhere.
But Irsay and the Colts ultimately made the right choice, even if it isn't the sexy one. Griffin has garnered plenty of love these last six months, but Luck is widely believed to be the best player on the board. He is, in many ways, an ideal successor to Peyton Manning.
Or, to put it another way, Luck.
