Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones indicated Tuesday that it’s likely quarterback Dak Prescott will land on injured reserve, which would knock him out of the lineup for a minimum of four games.
“It’s likely we’ll IR him,” Jones said on his weekly radio hit on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “We’ll see how his rehab goes.”
But even before the Cowboys see how Prescott looks, they seem to be bracing for him being out for multiple weeks.
"It's an extended period of time here, so I wouldn't dare make a prediction when it could be,” Jones said.
Prescott injured his hamstring in Sunday’s 27-21 loss to the Falcons, coming out of the game early in the fourth quarter after Atlanta took a two-score lead. Prescott completed 18 of 24 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown while also rushing three times for 30 yards.
Cooper Rush replaced Prescott and completed 13 of 25 passes for 115 yards and one touchdown.
In spite of the Cowboys’ record and Prescott’s injury, they traded for wideout Jonathan Mingo from the Carolina Panthers in an exchange of 2025 draft picks on Tuesday.
Dallas' next four games are against the Eagles and Texans at home in Weeks 10 and 11, followed by a road game at the Commanders in Week 12 before they return home to host the Giants on Thanksgiving. The Cowboys are in third place in the NFC East, three games behind the Eagles.
If the Cowboys place Prescott on IR, he’d miss all four of those games.
Rush, who turns 31 years old in a few weeks, has started six career games, all for Dallas and all in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. The Cowboys are 5-1 with Rush starting. In his career, he’s completed 165 of 275 passes (60.0%) for 1,786 yards, nine TDs and six interceptions. His best work came in the 2022 season, when he led Dallas to four straight wins with Prescott injured.
