Dak Prescott's 2024 campaign is over.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said on 105.3 The Fan Tuesday that Prescott is scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday on his injured hamstring, which will knock him out for the rest of the season.
“He’ll have it there in New York," Jones said. "He had a good visit last night and he wants to do that there, and he’s got great medical doctors up there. His prognosis is wonderful, it just means we’re not going to have him the rest of the year.”
Prescott flew to New York on Monday to visit a specialist to determine the next steps with his hamstring injury. The options were rest and rehab -- which would knock him out about a month and a half -- or surgery, which comes with a three-month timeline.
Surgery it is.
The hamstring injury suffered in Week 9 was initially diagnosed as a partial tendon avulsion, meaning the hamstring pulled partway off the bone. In this case, the club opted to err on the side of caution with the star quarterback.
Given the state of the 3-6 Cowboys, Prescott missing six or so weeks doomed their season anyway, so opting for a surgery that gets him completely healthy for 2025 makes sense.
Prescott's is the latest injury during a season in which the bug badly bit the Cowboys. Micah Parsons missed four games, Demarcus Lawrence is on injured reserve, as are Brandin Cooks, Sam Williams, Marshawn Kneeland, Amani Oruwariye, and others.
With Prescott out for the season, the Cowboys will plow forward with Cooper Rush under center. Jones noted that Rush will remain in the saddle -- despite the backup's atrocious start against Philadelphia.
"Cooper has shown that he has the capability to compete and win in games," Jones said. "He does give us our best chance. Frankly, that was really an out-of-character game for him based on what we've seen and we know about Cooper."
If Rush continues to struggle, Dallas could see what former No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance has to offer. The Cowboys traded a fourth-round pick for the backup QB in 2023. Lance made his first appearance in a Cowboys jersey in relief on Sunday. He's a free agent after the season.
