After watching Justin Durant and Bruce Carter depart through free agency, the Dallas Cowboys have tapped the open market for a linebacker of their own.
The agent for Andrew Gachkartweeted Sunday that the former Chargers defender has joined forces with the 'Boys. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Gachkar received a two-year deal worth up to $5.5 million, per a source.
Gachkar started five games for San Diego and has appeared in 63 contests since being picked by the Bolts in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He's versatile enough to play inside and out and help on special teams. Gachkar also performed well down the stretch last season as a run-stuffer.
With Durant now in Atlanta and Carter joining the Bucs, Dallas still needs more depth. The return of Pro Bowl linebacker Sean Lee is a godsend, but Carter, especially, was a versatile piece of the puzzle in Dallas, even if he often underwhelmed. Fellow linebacker Cameron Lawrence might be in for a bigger role in 2015, while we still expect Dallas to ponder re-signing Rolando McClain.
We're just days into the new league year, meaning the Cowboys have plenty of time to add bodies through free agency and next month's draft. Gachkar is just the start.
