Danny Woodhead suffered a gruesome season-ending injury to his fibula and right ankle in Week 3 last year that required surgery. The San Diego Chargers running back told the team's site he's healthy and ready for offseason workouts to start Monday.
"I feel really, really good," Woodhead said. "I really do. As far as the injury goes, that is something I'm not even thinking about. I'm thinking about trying to get better. I'm focusing on working on what I can do to be better than I was last year. Obviously I wasn't able to play a lot of games, so I should say I want to be better than I was that first season here."
The 5-foot-8, 200-pound runner is one of the best pass-catchers out of the backfield. It was an element the Chargers missed after he went down with the injury. Rookie Branden Oliver's 36 receptions for 271 yards was a far cry from Woodhead's totals in his first season in San Diego -- 605 yards on 76 catches.
"It's been a long process," Woodhead admitted of his rehab. "But definitely it makes you hungrier when the game is taken away. It makes you realize how blessed you are to play it. Not that I didn't understand that before, but when it is taken away for such a long amount of time, it makes you even hungrier. You miss being out there with your brothers. I'm excited for this season. I'm always excited, but my mentality might even be younger and hungrier than ever before."
