Taylor Mays can't seem to keep a job.
The six-year safety was cut on Friday by the Detroit Lions, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, per Mays' agent. The team announced the news on Saturday.
"You know, it's just kind of one of those things where everybody's got to perform. He gave it his best," Lions coach Jim Caldwell said, according to the team's official website.
The USC product has put on a variety of different uniforms since entering the league in 2010.
Detroit signed Mays this offseason after the Minnesota Vikingsreleased the safety in March. The veteran didn't last through the offseason for both clubs.
Before having a cup of coffee with the Lions and Vikings, Mays spent one year with the San Francisco 49ers and four with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Mays has primarily been used a reserve safety. He has started only four games since his rookie season. The veteran has 98 tackles and one forced fumble in his career.
The timing of Mays' release could be beneficial. As Rapoport noted, teams such as New York Giants, Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles might be on the lookout for help at safety due to injuries.
