Donte Whitner concerned about his future with 49ers?

The San Francisco 49ers shook up their secondary Friday by acquiring troubled cornerback Eric Wright from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Wright's arrival means the 49ers likely will cut ties with one of their in-house cornerbacks. Safety Donte Whitner isn't in that conversation, but two Friday morning tweets pointed to concerns about his own longevity in San Francisco.

We'll go out on a limb and guess this is Whitner's (not-so-subtle) hint for a contract extension. Whitner, who turns 28 next week, is scheduled to earn $3.85 million in the final season of the three-year, $11.75 million contract he signed with the 49ers in 2011.

The 49ers might be more comfortable taking a wait-and-see approach on Whitner. He's coming off a uneven season in which he dipped to 53rd in ProFootballFocus.com's safety rankings. He had ranked seventh one season earlier.

If Whitner can regain his 2011 form, the 49ers are sure to want him around.
