Duke walk-on defensive end Danny Doyle learned he had earned a scholarship this week, but Blue Devils coach David Cutcliffe wasn't the one to give him the news.
Instead, Cutcliffe enlisted the help of Doyle's parents, Tianne and Dan, to give their son the big surprise. The reaction from Doyle and his teammates was captured on video for the school's YouTube channel:
Playing defensive end at just 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds is hard enough, much less as a walk-on. Doyle nevertheless rose to the top of the team's depth chart following spring practice, despite very limited playing experience. He came up with a fumble recovery in Duke's final scrimmage of the spring, and came up with a scholarship after two seasons in the program.
The second scoop, to be sure, was worth a lot more money than the first.
