Eagles' Josh Sweat on free agency: 'Money's important,' but I want to be in 'right situation'

The dust has hardly settled on Philadelphia's Super Bowl LIX victory, but there's already plenty to consider regarding the team's championship defense.

Principle among those considerations after the Eagles manhandled the Kansas City Chiefs offense is how many upcoming defensive free agents -- Josh Sweat, Milton Williams, Zack Baun and Brandon Graham (who could also retire) -- Philly can bring back.

As far as Sweat, the team's sack leader, is considered, a proper fit could play as big a role as the potential payday.

“Money’s important, sure, but I want to be in the right situation,” Sweat said following the 40-22 win, via the Philadelphia Inquirer. “I don’t know what it looks like for me now, but I’m happy.”

And what team could provide a better situation than the Eagles?

Philadelphia pressured Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes on Sunday on 38.1% of his dropbacks, compiling six sacks and helping to force three turnovers, all without sending a single blitzer.

As he did during the regular season with eight sacks, Sweat feasted in that environment more than any other Eagle on the game's biggest stage. The 27-year-old logged six pressures and 2.5 sacks, both team highs, emphatically proving his worth while making amends for his season-long five-game sackless streak.

Other teams will surely come calling, though. Sweat's performance with the entire football world watching all but guarantees that.

Last year, Sweat agreed to restructure his contract, eschewing a likely pay increase on the open market.

To retain one of their biggest Super Bowl heroes, who could've earned game Most Valuable Player honors just as easily as eventual MVP Jalen Hurts, Philly may have to pay up this time around.

“I should’ve had it,” Sweat said of the MVP hardware. “I could’ve had it. It’s all good, though.”

Most Eagles fans will be hoping they won't have to ponder shoulda, coulda, woulda's about re-signing their leading pass rusher come next season.
