East Carolina defensive end Terrell Stanley, voted the Pirates' most valuable defensive lineman in 2013, is in critical condition in a Greenville, N.C., hospital after being involved in a car accident Tuesday morning.
Stanley and teammate Isaac Harris, a starting offensive tackle, were en route from their off-campus residence to school when the accident happened, the school's athletic website reported. Stanley was the driver; Harris was taken to a hospital and released.
The accident report said Stanley lost control of his 2002 Lincoln shortly after 6 a.m. and that the vehicle "crashed down an embankment" near a bridge over the Tar River.
Stanley (6-foot-2, 266 pounds) started 12 games for the Pirates and made 45 tackles, with seven sacks and 10 tackles for loss. Harris (6-7, 304) started 13 games at left tackle.
