When we put together a look at the five worst NFL rosters earlier this offseason, the San Diego Chargerssneaked on the list. The defense isn't awful, but the offensive line and skill positions are very thin.
It's no surprise, however, that safety Eric Weddledisagrees with our assessment.
"Now, shoot, I feel like we're the best team in the league," Weddle told the U-T San Diego on Tuesday. "And a lot of that is because of coach (Mike) McCoy and the way he presents himself -- the way he portrays what he wants. A lot of what you are as a team is attitude, and you can control that.
"I'm just excited. It's a new year, a new belief. Until the season ends, I think we're going to be the best."
With apologies to Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates, Weddle is playing better than anyone else on the Chargers. He's going to have to lead a defense that lost a lot of veteran pieces: Takeo Spikes, Antwan Barnes, Vaughn Martin, Antoine Cason, Atari Bigby and Antonio Garay all are gone from last year's squad.
That's not necessarily a bad thing. Change was needed. In a relatively weak AFC West, even a shaky roster like the Chargers can compete.
Even if they aren't close to the best.
