CLEVELAND -- Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel is going back to college.
Akron has called a morning media briefing to announce it has hired Tressel, who was forced to resign last May amid a scandal at Ohio State. Tressel is taking an administrative position at the school, where he began his coaching career as an undergraduate assistant with the Zips. Tressel's new position is not in the school's athletic department.
Spokesperson Eileen Korey said Tressel and school officials had been in discussions since December, when he assisted Akron in its search for a new football coach. Akron hired former Auburn coach Terry Bowden.
Tressel served as a replay consultant last season for the Indianapolis Colts. He met with team owner Jim Irsay about the team's head coaching position but didn't get the job.
