SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) - Southern California authorities are searching countryside near the city of Simi (see-mee) Valley for former professional football player Erik Affholter, who was reported to have failed to return from a day hike.
Police Lt. Mike King tells the Ventura County Start (http://bit.ly/LJVBcp) that a search began about 10 p.m. Sunday when Affholter's girlfriend reported him overdue.
Simi Valley is surrounded by hills and mountains about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Weather in the area has been mild, with highs Sunday around 70 degrees and overnight lows in the 50s.
The 46-year-old Affholter was a standout wide receiver at Southern California in the 1980s and went on to play for Green Bay in 1991.
