Favre receives injection in ankle, unsure how it will hold up

Brett Favre is back as quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings, but can his surgically repaired left ankle withstand the rigors of a 20th NFL season?

Favre, who received an injection of lubricant into the joint after Saturday night's preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks, told Peter King of Sports Illustrated that he isn't sure.

"I don't know. I have no idea, really," Favre said. "My ankle just seems to get easier to sprain. I know everyone thinks the New Orleans game [the NFC Championship Game] killed me, but it was bad before then. Now we'll see if I can make it. My mind's telling me one thing, but my body's telling me something else."

Favre also said he had "a cup full of stuff -- bone and all these other loose bodies" removed during his May 22 surgery.

Favre had the highest passer rating (107.2) and best touchdown-to-interception ratio (33-7) of his career during the 2009 season, his first in Minnesota. The Vikings lost in overtime to the eventual Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints in the NFC Championship Game.
