There is plenty of distance between college football's top players and the 2015 NFL Draft -- not only the rest of the football season, but the scouting season as well. For now, though, things look good for Stanford wide receiver Ty Montgomery. Reese's Senior Bowl executive director Phil Savage, the former general manager of the Cleveland Browns, likes what he sees from the senior.
"Ty will likely be a first-round pick because of his combination value as a receiver and return man, and with that said, should be able to get on the field as a rookie and help an NFL team right away," Savage wrote in the latest seniorbowl.com scouting report.
Montgomery figures to be a strong candidate for the Senior Bowl, and brings a physical style to the position that NFL clubs appreciate. Savage likened his frame to that of Arizona Cardinals star cornerback Patrick Peterson.
"He is an ideal flanker that can knock the top off of the defense and also run with the football when running underneath the coverage. With his frame, football demeanor and toughness, expect him to have a long, productive pro career," Savage wrote.
Montgomery has been a focal point of the Cardinal offense this season with 26 catches in four games, but his average of 10.6 yards per catch is rather pedestrian. Montgomery is making an impact in other ways, though. He's rushed nine times for 62 yards and a touchdown, and is maintaining explosive return averages (21.8 yards on six punt returns, 29.8 yards on five kickoff returns).
