Gostkowski's injury forces Pats WR Welker to kick vs. Browns

New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker kicked an extra point during Sunday's 34-14 road loss to the Cleveland Browns.

Welker, forced into kicking duty because Stephen Gostkowski suffered a thigh injury during the first half, drilled his kick to bring the Patriots within 27-14 with 6:37 left. He then kicked a pop-up to Browns return man Joshua Cribbs on the ensuing kickoff.

It's the first time Welker has kicked since he was a member of the Miami Dolphins in 2004. Against the Patriots in Week 5 of that season, Welker took over kicking duties when Olindo Mare was injured during pregame. Welker handled kickoffs, and he hit a 29-yard field goal and an extra point in that game.

Gostkowski was announced as doubtful to return after appearing to injure his thigh on a kickoff during the first half. He spent the remainder of the game on the sideline.
