MANKATO, Minn. -- The Minnesota Vikings are hoping wide receiver Greg Childs can recover fully from a freak injury, in which he ruptured the patellar tendon in both of his knees, ending his rookie season before it began.
Coach Leslie Frazier said Childs was having surgery Monday. The fourth-round draft pick from Arkansas was hurt Saturday at the end of a scrimmage, when he tried to jump for a pass. The Vikings placed Childs on injury waivers Monday, a procedural move before they put him on injured reserve.
Frazier says Childs was distraught but determined to come back and play next year.
The Vikings also scheduled offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz for surgery Tuesday to repair a sports hernia. Schwartz was competing with Brandon Fusco for the starting right guard spot.
