The Seattle Seahawks placed cornerback Tharold Simon on injured reserve and promoted running back Rod Smith from the practice squad, the team announced Saturday.
Simon dislocated his toe prior to the season opener and played briefly in Week 2 before suffering a setback. Simon missed his rookie season due to a similar injury. The corner started five games in 2014 and earned one interception. He played 43 snaps in the Seahawks' Super Bowl loss.
Replacing Simon on the active roster is running back Rod Smith, who will provide depth with Marshawn Lynch missing his second game of the season.
An undrafted rookie out of Ohio State, Smith compiled 70 rushing yards on 10 carries in the preseason and caught six passes for 27 yards. He was waived prior to the season and signed to the practice squad.
Thomas Rawls, another undrafted rookie, will get the start against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. Veteran Fred Jackson is questionable with an ankle injury suffered Monday. If Jackson can't go or suffers a set back during the contest, Smith could see the first action of his career.
