Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes started Sunday's AFC Championship Game on the bench, and even though his 61 receiving yards were second only to teammate Dustin Keller between both teams' pass-catchers, it wasn't enough to propel New York into the Super Bowl.
So one day after losing 24-19 to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Holmes expressed his annoyance with the Jets' offensive game plan, *The Star-Ledger* reported Monday.
Holmes said he watched "the first couple plays" of the Jets' opening series and was frustrated by offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer's play-calling.
"Ask Coach Schottenheimer what happened," Holmes said. "He'll explain everything to you.”
"We've got to put together the plays that we've been running against these guys, what's been working for us," he said. "We kind of got away from our game plan in the game, and it forced us to go do what we have to do to survive."
"I'm at loss for words for why we played that poorly," Ryan said.
The second-year coach referred to his postgame comments in which he said nobody had the right to criticize the Jets as "a ridiculous statement."
"Our best is yet to come," Ryan said, telling reporters that Schottenheimer "absolutely" would be back next season.
Ryan also said the team would like to retain Holmes and wide receiver Braylon Edwards.
"I don't know if it's feasible, but we'd love both guys back," Ryan said.
