KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City quarterback Damon Huard was shaken up by a hit from Denver's Elvis Dumervil in the third quarter on Sunday and replaced by Brodie Croyle.
Croyle, a second-year pro, was expected to be the starter this season but failed to beat out Huard, an 11-year veteran. Dumervil smashed into Huard, knocking the ball loose, and linebacker Nate Webster picked it up and ran it in from 17 yards for a touchdown and a 19-8 Denver lead.
Huard was attended to by trainers on the sideline following the play, with an ice pack on his neck.
