Sunday was a rough, painful day on the NFL injury front.
Few teams escaped Week 2 without an injury to a prominent player. Running backs were particularly damaged Sunday, with the likes of Adrian Peterson, Jonathan Stewart, Doug Martin, Thomas Rawls, Danny Woodhead, Ameer Abdullah and Arian Foster among those exiting with injuries.
Info on all the running backs should trickle in throughout Monday, as tests reveal the extent of each injury. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that initial X-rays on Lions running back Ameer Abdullah's foot came out negative, per a source. More tests are expected to be done Monday, but the belief is the running back suffered a foot sprain.
It's positive news that Abdullah escaped without a break in the foot. He limped off the field early in Detroit's home loss and was seen after the contest in a walking boot.
The Lions should have an estimate on how much time their shifty runner will miss after additional tests. Pass-catching back Theo Riddick will likely see more carries if Abdullah misses significant time. Rookie Dwayne Washington is also in line for a bigger workload. After sitting out the first two weeks, preseason darling Zach Zenner could be activated in Abdullah's absence.
Detroit also received negative news on the defensive side of the ball. Defensive end Ezekiel Ansah suffered a high-ankle sprain in Sunday's loss to the Titans, Rapoport reported per a source informed. The pass rusher will miss time, although the timetable hasn't been determined yet.
Other injuries we are tracking on Monday:
- Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has a torn meniscus in his right knee, head coach Mike Zimmer told KFAN on Monday morning.
- Chargers running back Danny Woodhead tore his ACL on Sunday, the team announced. The back is out for the season. Safety Jahleel Addae has a fractured left clavicle and is having surgery Monday, head coach Mike McCoy said.
- Jimmy Garoppolo (sprained AC Joint) won't start Thursday's game versus the Houston Texans, Rapoport reported. The New England Patriots hope he's back by Week 4.
- Browns quarterback Josh McCown (shoulder) is out this week and is week-to-week "from here on," coach Hue Jackson told reporters. Rookie Cody Kessler is expected to start in place of McCown.
- Saints corner P.J. Williams suffered a concussion after being kneed in the head. Rapoport reported that the belief is Williams escaped without a spine injury. Coach Sean Payton announced Williams "will be coming back (Monday) afternoon" and "all the news is positive."
- Dolphins coach Adam Gase said running back Arian Foster (groin) is day to day.
- Broncos coach Gary Kubiak told reporters DeMarcus Ware (broken bone in forearm) will have surgery tomorrow morning and will be out four or five weeks.
Another key player in Seattle's offense, Doug Baldwin, is dealing with a knee injury. Coach Pete Carroll sounded optimistic about the wideout playing Sunday against the 49ers though. "He seems to be OK ... We'll see what happens Wednesday to Thursday."
- Browns defensive end Carl Nassib suffered a broken hand in the loss to the Ravens on Sunday, Rapoport reported. He'll have surgery, but a timeline for a return to the field still needs to be determined.
Browns offensive lineman Cameron Erving (pulmonary contusion), meanwhile, was released from the hospital on Monday morning, the team announced. He's considered week-to-week.
- Chiefs coach Andy Reid told media members that running back Jamaal Charles (knee) looked better last week but his status for Week 3 is still unclear.
- Broncos offensive lineman Donald Stephenson suffered a calf injury that could keep him out 2-3 weeks, a source told Rapoport.
- New York Jets coach Todd Bowles didn't provide much of an update on receiver Brandon Marshall's injured knee, only denying that he had a sprained MCL: "That's not what I was told."
Bowles said receiver Eric Decker is battling through a sore shoulder.
- Redskins nose tackle Kedric Golston (hamstring) has been placed on injured reserve, the team announced.
- Bucs running back Doug Martin will have an MRI on Tuesday after suffering a hamstring injury against the Cardinals, but the severity of it is unknown as of now. Bucs coach Dirk Koetter told reporters that backup tailback Charles Sims can be the feature back if Martin misses any time.
- The Bears announced quarterback Jay Cutler left Monday's loss to the Eagles in the third quarter after he suffered an injury to his throwing hand. Teammate Lamarr Houston also didn't return after he suffered what coach John Fox after the game described as a "substantial" knee injury.
Defensive backs Adrian Amos and Bryce Callahan were ruled out after suffering concussions. Chicago nose tackle Eddie Goldman suffered an ankle injury in the fourth quarter and didn't return after being carted off to the locker room.
Ka'Deem Carey exited early due to a hamstring injury, and the Chicago running back didn't return. Coach John Fox said after the game it was a hamstring strain.
