Injury roundup: Wes Welker makes practice return

Wes Welker has taken his first step toward a return to game action following his latest concussion.

The veteran wide receiver joined Broncos teammates on the field for practice on Monday. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Welker has yet to be cleared for contact or to play, according to a Denver source.

Welker suffered a concussion -- his third since last November -- after taking a hit from D.J. Swearinger during a preseason loss to the Houston Texans. Peyton Manning, angered by Swearinger's shot on Welker, was penalized (and later fined) for taunting the safety after a touchdown pass on the subsequent play.

A return to practice is a positive indication Welker escaped a long-term setback. The wideout has more checkpoints to reach if he wants to play Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, but he's on the right track.
