Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty, who suffered what the school called a "mild concussion" in Saturday's narrow win over Texas Tech, is progressing through concussion management protocol.
The Dallas Morning News reported that his status for this week's game against visiting Kansas State remains "uncertain." Baylor faces a must-win situation against the two-loss Wildcats to keep alive its playoff hopes.
After the win over Texas Tech, Petty -- considered perhaps the top senior quarterback in the nation -- told reporters he suffered from headaches and double vision but still expected to play against K-State: "I'm going to play. I'm going to pass all the tests." Sophomore Seth Russell would start if Petty can't go; he started the second game of the season, a rout of FCS opponent Northwestern State, when Petty was hurt, and has thrown 85 passes and made 32 rushing attempts this season.
Meanwhile, Baylor seems certain to be without tailback Devin Chafin, who suffered a dislocated elbow against Texas Tech. He is the team's third-leading rusher and is second with eight rushing TDs.
In other injury news:
» Georgia Tech's DeAndre Smelter, the Yellow Jackets' leading receiver, seems likely to miss this weekend's ACC championship game against Florida State because of a knee injury suffered in a win over Georgia. "I think it would probably be a reach" to say Smelter would play, Tech coach Paul Johnson said on a Sunday teleconference. Smelter has 35 receptions for 715 yards and seven TDs; he is one of just two Tech wide receiver with more than five catches.
» Oregon senior Hroniss Grasu, perhaps be the nation's best center, has missed the past two games and might not be able to play Friday in the Pac-12 championship game against Arizona. The Portland Tribune reported that Grasu was walking on crutches with a boot on his left foot after Oregon's rout of Oregon State this past Saturday. Ducks offensive line coach Steve Greatwood told the newspaper that Grasu is "day-to-day. We're just keeping our fingers crossed."
» Kansas State could again be without starting DT Travis Britz when it plays at Baylor this weekend. An ankle injury kept him out of this past Saturday's rout of Kansas. While K-State has good depth at the position, Britz has been one of the Wildcats' best defensive players this season.
» Florida State starting TB Karlos Williams missed almost all of the second half of this past Saturday's win over Florida with a concussion suffered on the second-half kickoff, and his status for this weekend's ACC championship game is unknown. While Williams is a senior and more well-rounded, true freshman backup Dalvin Cook is a better weapon. Cook possesses game-breaking speed and is coming off a career-best 144-yard performance against Florida.
» Texas Tech sophomore QB Davis Webb, who hasn't played since Sept. 25, is scheduled for shoulder surgery this week, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported; it will be on the right-handed Webb's left shoulder. He is expected to be able to participate in spring practice.
