If the Jacksonville Jaguars have any interest in trading the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL draft, their needs would best be served by South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins being chosen ahead of them, by the Houston Texans and St. Louis Rams at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively.
A 1-2 draft start of Clowney-Watkins would give the Jaguars their pick of the quarterback pool, which itself could be too attractive for the club to pass on. But three of five possible scenarios for the Jaguars to trade the pick, according to jacksonville.com, would be set up by getting Clowney and Watkins off the board first. The three possible suitors: the Oakland Raiders, Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills, two of which -- Oakland and Minnesota -- have a need at quarterback and could be inclined to move up to claim their favorite at the position.
NFL Media analysts Daniel Jeremiah, Bucky Brooks and Charles Davis all project Clowney to be the Texans' No. 1 pick in their most recent mock drafts, with Davis also seeing Watkins going to the Rams at No. 2. That would move the quarterback market to Jacksonville for 10 on-the-clock minutes in which Jaguars general manager David Caldwell's phone would figure to light up with trade interest.
Beat writer Ryan O'Halloran suggests Clowney also keys two other trade possibilities, with the Jaguars moving up to the Rams' selection at No. 2 to claim him themselves, or trading down to the Atlanta Falcons' No. 6 pick to allow Atlanta to take him at No. 3.
