Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston has been pegged by most as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft since the calendar turned over from 2014.
You wouldn't know that by looking at the signal-caller's schedule in the run-up to the draft, however, and that could be the reason for missing out on a trip to visit with the New York Jets.
NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport tweeted on Tuesday a potential visit between the quarterback-needy franchise and Winston might not happen, as both sides are having issues finding a good time for the two parties to come together.
It's not unusual for prospects to take visits to multiple teams in the top half of the draft, and Winston is no exception despite being penciled in atop the draft. In addition to a visit and private workout for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the former Seminoles star has done the same with the Tennessee Titans and is scheduled to head to Chicago this week, as well.
While incumbent starter Geno Smith won't mind the Jets not being able to work out Winston, the young Heisman Trophy winner's stock won't take any sort of hit due to a packed schedule. If, on the very off chance, he ends up falling to the team at No. 6, the team would likely sprint to the podium with a card that has Winston's name on it.
Winston still figures to be taken first overall though, so it's unlikely the Jets even have a shot at him unless they're willing to trade Manhattan and a few first-round picks to the Bucs. Despite being dropped by NFL Media analyst Mike Mayock to the second spot in his updated quarterback rankings, it appears doubtful Winston would fall below the Titans at No. 2 overall given how well he fits with that franchise.
With Winston potentially out of reach, the Jets figure to kick the tires on Mayock's top-ranked quarterback, Marcus Mariota. The team has already sent a large contingent of staffers to privately work out the Oregon star in Eugene and has certainly done its homework on the dual-threat QB as a potential selection at No. 6 overall.
