Robert Griffin III remained part of the Washington Redskins' organization beyond Saturday's cut deadline.
On Sunday, coach Jay Gruden insisted the team didn't cut ties with RGIII because the quarterback still can play a role behind starter Kirk Cousins.
"We kept him because we thought he's one of our top 53 guys," Gruden said. "We'd like to have three quarterbacks in the building -- no question -- that are capable."
Gruden said he'll decide whether Griffin or Colt McCoy would be the No. 2 quarterback once RGIII is cleared, perhaps later this week.
The coach said he didn't believe that keeping Griffin on the squad would become a distraction.
"The only distractions are made out here" said Gruden, referencing the media. "We don't feel like he's a distraction at all. He's a quarterback that's young, talented and done some great things. You can never have too many quarterbacks in your building. That's very important. We learned that the hard way last year. You never want to use three. This is a violent game and quarterbacks are at risk back there. It's important to have three good quarterbacks back there ... you want to hold onto them."
NFL Media's Jeff Darlington reported Saturday the decision to keep Griffin -- and the $16.2 million injury risk -- had the approval of general manager Scot McCloughan, Gruden and owner Dan Snyder.
