Jets' Calvin Pryor missed meetings before benching

New York Jets rookie safety Calvin Pryor's star has fallen hard and fast.

After spending the offseason hearing glowing praise from Rex Ryan, Pryor didn't play a single defensive snap during Sunday's win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

One reason behind the benching could have been a missed meeting this week. Rich Cimini of ESPN.com first reported on Monday that Pryor has missed multiple meetings this season. Muhammad Wilkerson confirmed one skipped meeting to the New York Daily News.

"He's got to learn from that," Wilkerson said. "Guys spoke to him already, and I'm pretty sure that he knows what is expected of him. He's a first-round pick, and we expect more."

Pryor played just 13 snaps Sunday, all on special teams.

After Sunday's game, Pryor wouldn't give the reason for his benching, but he said multiple times it was Ryan's decision.

"It was a coach's decision," Pryor said, per NJ.com. "It's not about me. I'm trying to enjoy this victory. I'm happy for Jaiquawn Jarrett. He played an outstanding game. The only way I can learn from this is just go see what he did, learn from his mistakes and try to get better."

Jarrett replaced Pryor as the starter and went on to pick off Ben Roethlisbergertwice Sunday and add a sack.

After inspired play, 25-year-old Jarrett could keep the first-round pick on the bench -- or at least eat into his snaps some more.

Chances for a player to prove himself come oddly sometimes in the NFL. Jarrett's might have come Sunday because a rookie missed meetings.
